    An Honest Comparison

Boat Wraps vs. Marine Protection Film: What's the Difference?

One is a cosmetic finish. The other protects the hull underneath — in clear or in color.

People searching for a boat wrap usually want one of two completely different things, and the word doesn't distinguish between them.

Some want their hull to look different — a color change, a name and hailport, a fishing team livery, a hull graphic. That's vinyl work, and a good sign shop does it well. I don't.

Others use the word because it's the one they've heard, but what they actually want is for the finish they already have to stop getting chewed up by pilings and fenders. That's protection film, and that's what I install.

This page is here to sort out which one you're after.

What a vinyl boat wrap does

Vinyl is a printed or colored film applied over your hull to change its appearance. Color changes, graphics, boat names, team branding. It's a cosmetic product and it's very good at what it does.

    What to know about it:

    • It covers your existing finish rather than protecting it
    • It's typically applied to a whole surface for visual continuity
    • Removal can be involved, and what's underneath is whatever it was when the vinyl went on
    • Sun and salt degrade printed vinyl over time, which is why it's a periodic replacement

If you want your boat to look different, this is the right product and I'm not the right person. Find a good marine sign shop.

    What marine protection film does

Protection film is urethane applied over your gelcoat. It's available clear or in a range of colors. Clear goes over your existing finish without changing how the boat looks — from a few feet away you won't know it's there. Colored film is a finish change that also protects.

In either case, it's a protective layer rather than a purely cosmetic one. Dock rash, fender wear, abrasion from lines and pilings hit the film. It self-heals light scratching. It blocks UV, so the gelcoat underneath stops oxidizing.

The point isn't appearance. The point is that the finish you have today is the finish you still have in several seasons — which is what a surveyor and a buyer are actually looking at.

Which one you're actually looking for

You want vinyl if: you're after printed graphics, lettering, a hailport, a team or charter livery, or a fully custom printed design that film doesn't offer.

You want protection film if: your gelcoat looks good and you want it to stay that way, your boat lives in a slip and takes contact, or you're thinking about resale value and want the original finish preserved. Colored film is also an option if you want a finish change that also protects.

They aren't competing products. They solve different problems, and plenty of boats have neither.

    What I do

I'm a certified Yacht Armor installer working across New England — Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Cape Cod. I install protection film dockside at your slip or storage facility. Your boat never leaves the water.

I don't do vinyl, graphics, color changes, or lettering. If that's what you need, I'll tell you straight and you'll be better served by a marine sign shop.

    Common questions

Do you do boat wraps or hull graphics?

No. I install marine protection film — no vinyl, no printed graphics, no lettering. The film itself comes in clear or in colors, but I don't do printed designs, lettering, or graphics. If that's what you're after, a marine sign shop is who you want.

Will protection film change how my boat looks?

Only if you want it to. Clear film goes over your existing finish and is effectively invisible from a few feet away. The film also comes in colors if a finish change is what you're after. I bring samples to every inspection so you can see the options against your own gelcoat.

Can I put protection film over vinyl?

That depends entirely on the vinyl and its condition, and it's not something I'd answer without seeing the boat. Film bonds to the surface underneath, so what's under it matters.

Which one protects my gelcoat better?

Protection film, and it isn't close. Vinyl covers the finish; film absorbs what would otherwise damage it. Vinyl also has to come off eventually, and what's underneath is whatever condition it was in when the vinyl went on.

Do you come to my boat?

Yes. Everything I do is dockside at your slip or storage facility.

    What does it cost?

Every hull is different, so I don't quote by phone or email. I look at the boat in person, then give you a number. Call and we'll set up a time.

Not sure which one you need?

Call and describe the boat and what you're trying to accomplish. If it's a look you're after, I'll point you to someone good. If it's protection, that's what I do.
